Skelton Mountain Dream Ranch is nestled in a valley, with Stove Prairie Creek running through it, which is located 22 miles west of Fort Collins and approximately 80 miles northwest of Denver, Colorado
SMDR's 180 acres include pastures, woods, ponds, a stream and mountains in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Started in 1991, our modern facilities include:
- 30' diameter round pen
- 100' by 250' outdoor arena
- five very large pastures with shelters
- 60 ton capacity hay barn
In order to assure that our breeding program is of the very highest caliber, SMDR voluntarily joined the CRIA CABALLAR's Revision process.
Our five stallions and seven brood mares have all been inspected and approved by the CRIA CABALLAR for inclusion in the Spanish Stud Book as breeding stock. We have imported one stallion and two mares directly from Spain and two stallions and one mare from Costa Rica to insure the quality of our stock.
In addition to the ranch detail above, we have facilities to collect, examine and ship cooled semen.
Our Pure Bred Spanish Horses enjoy the freedom of the meadows, woods and streams as they grow to their potential. During their first two years, our young horses learn to be horses by running and playing in our majestic pastures. They learn to drink from and cross mountain streams while ducking their heads as they move through the woods.
After their second birthday, our junior horses start to learn about working as they are slowly initiated into ground driving and then to pulling a jog cart. Here they learn all the important basic maneuvers. They may even be taken to a few local shows to start teaching them about travelling. When they are three years old and we have made sure their knees have closed, they are started under saddle.
You can see from the results in the show ring, SMDR horses truly exemplify the tradition of the Pure Spanish Horse of Spain.
